District 22

Boon Lay, Jurong, Tuas

District 22 is located in the western part of Singapore and is primarily made up of industrial factories and residential homes. The three main areas of District 22 are Boon Lay, Jurong and Tuas. The industrial component of District 22 is a key factor in Singapore’s economy. But it should also be mentioned that there are recreational facilities as well, including an ice-skating rink, as well as a golf course. People looking for a home in District 22 can choose among a variety of HDB flats and condominiums at The Lakeshore and Lakeville.

Boon Lay

The name Boon Lay comes from Mr. Chew Boon Lay who was a prominent landowner in the area around the turn of the 20th Century. The area evolved from being nothing more than a swampy jungle to a thriving industrial estate when the National Iron and Steel Mills (NISM) was built, which was Singapore’s first factory. One of Boon Lay’s most well-known places of interest is Jurong Hill Park with a spiral tower that provides a 360° panoramic view of Jurong region.

At the top of the hill in Jurong Hill Park you will find the Garden of Fame with trees planted by none other than Queen Elizabeth II, along with President Benjamin Henry Sheares and President Suharto. Another prominent place of interest is Jurong Bird Park, which features 600 species of birds, making this one of the largest bird parks worldwide. Boon Lay is also home to Barry Callebaut, one of the world’s largest chocolate factories and of great interest to dedicated foodies.

Jurong is primarily made up of the Jurong Industrial Estate, which meets the needs of the working class. To make the area more enjoyable for residents and visitors, the government developed the Jurong Lake District to include waterfront hotels, a lakeside playground, and parks. They also built a shopping mall called JCube with an Olympic-sized rink for ice skating, along with a 24km network of connectors that run from Bukit Batok to the Jurong East MRT Station.

Additional public housing estates are planned with 1,200 new flats being made available to Singaporeans. This is in addition to Chinese and Japanese Gardens with all their flora and fauna. We must also mention the Jurong Country Club and several more shopping centres, which include the IMM Shopping Mall where you will find the Giant Hypermart and Daiso.

Tuas is another major industrial centre filled factories belonging to a range of international companies like Compact, Epson, Hitachi, and Sony. Tuas is also where some of Singapore’s national industries are located, like Singapore Tin Industries and Tuas Incineration Plant.

In 1998 an alternative road to ease traffic between Singapore and Malaysia was built called Tuas 2nd Link. This relieved traffic flowing on the Causeway, which is Singapore’s primary route to Malaysia. Tuas is also where Raffles Country Club is located, which always attracts a number of Caucasians.
